You know the struggle is real. Everyday chores seem to multiply like rabbits, leaving little room for getting back your me time. The internet screams with endless lists of "shoulds" – laundry, dishes, vacuuming, dusting, trash... the cacophony is enough to make your head spin!

But what if we stopped focusing on what we should do and started focusing on how to win the Chore Wars? Because let's face it, this is a battle fought daily. But with a shift in mindset and a few clever tactics, it is possible to reclaim your time and find peace amidst the chaos.

This is something I struggle with daily and I, for one, am ready to shift my mindset or do whatever it is that I need to do to win this war. Between work and family alone there are more than enough things to keep someone busy for their entire life. How is it that a simple change in attitude or mindset could save me and you? Join me as I take a look at these methods and try to put something together to help all of us in the area of getting back your me time.

Shifting Your Mindset on Chores

It's time to declare war on chores! Not literally, of course, but a shift in mindset can make all the difference in how we approach these everyday tasks. Instead of viewing chores as a never-ending source of drudgery, try reframing them as challenges to be conquered, a necessary part of leveling up your life.

Think of yourself as an adventurer in the "Chore Wars," facing down the enemy of "me time" stealers. To reclaim your precious time and achieve victory, you need a strategy, a plan of attack. Here's how this RPG-inspired approach can help:

  • Re-identify Chores: First, banish the word "chores" from your vocabulary. It's loaded with negative connotations and evokes feelings of obligation and drudgery. Instead, reframe these tasks as opportunities for personal growth. Think of them as "daily quests," "weekly challenges," or "seasonal upgrades" that contribute to your overall skillset and well-being.
  • Reframe to Self-Care: By viewing chores as opportunities for self-improvement, you naturally shift your perspective from obligation to self-care. Cleaning the kitchen isn't just about dirty dishes; it's about creating a sanctuary of peace and order in your home. Mowing the lawn isn't just about taming the wilderness; it's about connecting with nature and getting some fresh air and exercise.
  • Track Your Success: Just like in a video game, tracking your progress can be incredibly motivating. Use a task management app like "Do It Now" to organize your to-do list, set reminders, and celebrate your victories (no matter how small). Seeing a visual representation of your accomplishments can provide a sense of satisfaction and encourage you to keep going. Review how I learned to gamify my life in an earlier post.

This approach has been a game-changer for me. I used to struggle with traditional checklists, feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of tasks vying for my attention. But by gamifying my chores and turning them into a series of challenges to overcome, I've found a renewed sense of purpose and motivation. It's like leveling up my life, one task at a time.

So, embrace your inner adventurer, equip yourself with the right tools and mindset, and prepare to conquer the Chore Wars! The rewards – a cleaner home, a more organized life, and more time for yourself – are well worth the effort.r of things that I need to get done. I truly believe that organizing my life into something akin to a Role Playing Game (RPG) has helped me focus my attention and motivation into improving my life one task at a time.

Hack Your Brain & Enjoy The Mundane

Let's face it, chores aren't exactly known for being thrilling. But what if we could find ways to make them less of a drag and actually, dare I say, enjoyable? Instead of viewing chores as a monotonous burden, try reframing them as an opportunity to engage your mind and body in a more positive way.

One of the simplest ways to do this is by incorporating activities you already love into your chore routine. Think of it as a "brain hack" for making the mundane more bearable. For example, listening to music or podcasts while mowing the lawn or gardening can transform a tedious task into an opportunity for entertainment and learning. It's a classic strategy for a reason – it works! The rhythmic hum of the lawnmower blends seamlessly with your favorite tunes, and before you know it, the yard is finished, and you've even learned a thing or two from that fascinating podcast.

While some people find solace in practices like praying, self-reflection, or meditation while cleaning, I personally find those activities require a different level of concentration. It's not always easy to achieve a meditative state while scrubbing the bathtub or battling dust bunnies. But hey, if it works for you, go for it!

Another helpful trick, especially for those with ADHD, is to simply start with one small task. Tell yourself, "I'm only going to fold one pair of pants," and often, that's all it takes to break through the inertia. Once you've started, you might find yourself surprised by the momentum that builds, carrying you through the rest of the laundry basket. It's a small mental shift that can have a big impact on productivity.

Lately, I've been experimenting with incorporating exercise into my cleaning routine. I call it "Chore-cise," and it's essentially a way to multitask your way to a cleaner house and a healthier body. This could be as simple as doing lunges while vacuuming, dancing with the duster, or squeezing in a few pushups between tasks. I'll admit, I haven't quite mastered the art of seamlessly integrating a full workout into my chores, but I've found that even small bursts of activity can make a difference. It helps combat the stiffness that often accompanies long periods of housework and adds an element of fun to an otherwise mundane routine.

While I don't believe "Chore-cise" can entirely replace dedicated workouts, it's a fantastic way to increase your overall movement throughout the day. And who knows, maybe one day I'll perfect the art of choreographing a cleaning routine that doubles as a killer cardio session! In the meantime, I'll keep experimenting with different ways to hack my brain and make chores a little less of a chore.

Time Blocking for Success

Time blocking, for those unfamiliar, is a productivity technique where you schedule specific blocks of time for various activities, including those pesky chores. Think of it like making appointments with yourself – except these appointments are dedicated to conquering the laundry pile or finally tackling that overflowing inbox. I personally find that using a visual calendar, like Google Calendar, makes this technique incredibly effective. Being able to see those blocks of time laid out helps me visualize my day and prioritize what truly matters.

This method works especially well for people who already rely on digital calendars for appointments and meetings. Why? Because you can treat your chore time with the same level of importance. When you've designated a specific time slot for cleaning the bathroom, you're less likely to let other commitments encroach on that time. If someone tries to schedule a meeting during your designated "Chore Hour," you have a legitimate reason to decline or suggest an alternative time. It's like putting up a "Do Not Disturb" sign for your own sanity and productivity.

Of course, life rarely goes exactly according to plan, and flexibility is key. In our household, things are fairly fluid, but we generally aim for a consistent routine. Weekdays follow a similar pattern: a brief respite after arriving home, followed by a whirlwind of dinner prep, kitchen cleanup, tidying the living room, bath time for the kids, feeding the animals, and whatever else lands on our daily chore list. To maintain some semblance of order, I block off weekday evenings (roughly 5 pm to 8 pm) for these essential tasks. This ensures that this time remains protected and isn't overtaken by less important activities.

Weekends are a bit more flexible, but we usually dedicate either Saturday or Sunday to tackling larger weekly chores. Think lawn mowing, deep cleaning, organizing closets – those tasks that often get pushed aside during the week. The exact day can shift depending on the weather (no one wants to mow the lawn in a downpour!) or other commitments. We also try to schedule any seasonal or monthly tasks, like cleaning out the garage or decluttering the basement, for a weekend day.

The beauty of time blocking lies in its adaptability. You can tailor it to your specific needs and preferences. Some people prefer to schedule their entire day down to the minute, while others prefer a more general outline. Experiment and find what works best for you. The goal is to create a system that helps you manage your time effectively, reduce stress, and ultimately, win back some precious "me time."

The Power of "Enough"

In the quest to conquer the Chore Wars and getting back your me time, it's crucial to address the hidden enemy: perfectionism. That's right, the relentless pursuit of a spotless home can actually sabotage your efforts to find balance and well-being. It's time to embrace the power of "enough."

Let's be honest, does it really matter if the baseboards aren't scrubbed every week? Or if the laundry basket isn't always empty? Striving for a picture-perfect home can create unnecessary pressure and steal precious time that could be spent on activities that truly nourish your soul.

Here's the truth: prioritizing your well-being doesn't mean neglecting your responsibilities. It's about finding a sustainable balance, a place where you can maintain a functional and comfortable living space without sacrificing your sanity or your free time.

Embrace Imperfection:

  • It's okay if the house isn't always spotless. Life is messy, and sometimes, a little clutter is a sign of a life well-lived. Don't let the pursuit of perfection prevent you from enjoying the present moment.
  • Prioritize self-care over a perfectly organized home. Remember, your well-being is just as important as a clean kitchen. Make time for activities that recharge you, even if it means the laundry has to wait.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help when needed. Delegate tasks to other family members, or consider hiring a cleaning service if your budget allows. It's okay to share the load and create more time for yourself.

Redefine "Clean":

  • Focus on creating a functional and comfortable living space, not a picture-perfect one. Does your home feel welcoming and inviting? Is it a space where you can relax and recharge? That's what truly matters.
  • Set realistic expectations for yourself and your family. Life is full of demands, and it's impossible to do everything perfectly. Focus on what's truly important and let go of the rest.

Remember, "clean" doesn't have to mean "perfect." It's about creating a space where you can thrive, both physically and mentally. So, ditch the pressure of perfectionism, embrace the power of "enough," and reclaim your time and your well-being.

Reflections on Chores & Self-Care

So, there you have it! We've explored some powerful strategies for winning the Chore Wars and getting back your me time. Remember, it all starts with a shift in mindset. Reframe those pesky chores as opportunities for self-improvement, incorporate enjoyable activities to make them more bearable, and embrace the power of "enough" to overcome the tyranny of perfectionism.

Time blocking can be your secret weapon in this battle, allowing you to schedule dedicated time for chores and protect your personal time from being overrun by other commitments. And don't forget the importance of finding joy in the mundane. Whether it's turning up the music and dancing while you dust or losing yourself in a captivating podcast while you garden, there are countless ways to make chores less of a chore.

Ultimately, finding a balance between responsibility and rest is an ongoing journey, not a destination. Be kind to yourself, experiment with different strategies, and celebrate your victories along the way. You deserve to have a clean and comfortable home and time to enjoy the things you love. So, go forth, conquer those chores, and reclaim your "me time"!
